Junction Support Services was proud to again collaborate with Wodonga TAFE at the annual UNiTE! – Walk Against Violence event in Wodonga.
The event, held on Wednesday, 26 November, is part of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that calls for collective action to prevent and eliminate all forms of gender-based violence.
Wearing orange to symbolise hope and a future free from violence, Junction staff joined hundreds of people, community organisations, schools, and businesses in solidarity at Junction Place, Wodonga, to stand in solidarity and raise awareness about the ongoing issue of violence against women and girls.
Junction’s Therapeutic Services Service Manager, Victoria Kean, said more than one in three women and girls will experience gender-based violence.
“We unite on this Walk Against Violence to demonstrate our shared commitment to taking a stand against violence in our community and building a safer future for our young people,” Victoria said.
“Together, we stand with victim survivors to help raise awareness, change attitudes, reduce stigma, and advocate for a future where everyone feels safe and respected.”
Along with the community walk through central Wodonga, the UNiTE! Walk Against Violence event held at Wodonga’s Junction Place also featured:
- Free food and interactive activities
- A pledge wall where people shared their commitments
- Artwork and lawn games
- Local support services connecting with the community
- Honouring victims and survivors through their stories, with respect and compassion
- Trained counsellors available for anyone who needed support.
“This event gives our community the chance to stand together and show that violence will not be tolerated,” said Ruby Sidebottom, a Wodonga TAFE Community Services student participating in the event project.
“By taking part in the UNiTE! Walk, we’re sending a message that respect, equality, and safety are values we all share.”
Along with Junction and Wodonga TAFE, Upper Murray Family Care, Wodonga Men’s Shed, Lavington Jindera Little Athletics, Infinity Coordination and Supports, Zonta Club of Albury Wodonga, and other local organisations also donated their time, resources and their passion to support this important event.
