Join the fight against homelessness

Unfortunately, because of predicted bad weather, we have had to cancel the planned Homelessness Week event in Wodonga on 8 August.

But you can still join the fight against homelessness.

Did you know that more than 1000 local people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness have sought assistance for themselves and their families from the region’s support agencies so far this year?

Hume Region Homelessness Network Coordinator Linda Grellman says homelessness is a growing crisis in our community.

“The housing affordability crisis has created a dire shortage of affordable options for people on very low incomes. There are families, couples and single people right across the Hume region who are doing it tough and are at risk of homelessness,” she says.

“Homelessness Week is an opportunity for us to shine a light on the issue and spark important discussions about the issues that are driving homelessness in Wodonga.”

Junction Support Services Youth Team manager Katharine Hodgens said homelessness can happen to anyone of any age.

“Family violence is one of the main reasons for homelessness,” she says.

“Family violence is a reason that young people have to leave home with nowhere to go and struggle to get a rental property because they don’t have any references.

“Family violence is the reason why some marriages end after 20 years, leaving people with nothing and nowhere to live.”
